What is a certified translation of a criminal record?

A certified translation of a criminal record certificate is the official translation of the document — issued in Spain by the Central Register of Convicted Offenders of the Ministry of Justice — which certifies whether or not a person has a criminal record, signed and stamped by an authorised sworn translator. The translation is recognised as having the same validity as the original by consulates and authorities in other countries.

It is required for numerous international procedures: residence and work visas, applications for citizenship, work permits, recruitment processes, professional registration and adoption. Certification by a sworn translator guarantees that the consulate, government department or employer will accept the document as authentic.

A criminal record is a brief but particularly sensitive document, so we handle it with the utmost discretion and take great care to ensure the accuracy of personal details and official stamps. Many organisations require the certificate to bear the Hague Apostille before it is translated: if this applies to you, we will also translate the Apostille. As it is a short document, we usually deliver it quickly and at a reasonable price.

Frequently Asked Questions

Sworn translation of criminal records: frequently asked questions

When do I need a certified translation of my criminal record?
In almost any international procedure involving more than one country – such as residence or work visas, applications for citizenship, employment procedures, professional registration or adoption – the authorities require the certificate to be in the language of the destination country, and a certified translation is the only way to ensure it is legally valid.
Do I need a Hague Apostille before having the certificate translated?
In many cases, yes: quite a few countries require that a criminal record certificate be accompanied by a Hague Apostille before it is translated. If your certificate already has an Apostille, we will also translate the Apostille. If you are unsure, please check with the relevant authority in the destination country and we will help you organise the sequence of the procedures.
How do you ensure the confidentiality of such a sensitive document?
With absolute discretion. Only the appointed sworn translator has access to the certificate; we use secure channels for file sharing, and all our translators are bound by confidentiality agreements. Your personal information is protected at all times.
How long does it take to get a certified translation of a criminal record?
It usually takes between 2 and 5 working days, depending on the target language and our workload, although as it is a short document, it is usually one of the quickest to process. If your request is urgent, please let us know: we offer fast-track delivery options.
Will the translation of my criminal record be accepted abroad?
Our translations are signed and stamped by a translator authorised by the MAEC and meet the legal requirements; they are therefore recognised by consulates and official bodies in most countries. Final acceptance depends on the specific body in question, so it is advisable to check their requirements (language, apostille) before placing an order.
Is the certificate I download with an electronic signature valid?
Yes, for a certified translation, we can accept the certificate in PDF format or as a legible scan, including the one you download with a secure verification code (CSV) from the Ministry of Justice’s online portal. Please let us know where it’s going and we’ll tell you whether you also need an apostille or the original hard copy.
Can I sort this out without having to go anywhere?
Yes. You can send the certificate as a PDF or a scan and process it online, wherever you are, in complete confidence. If you need to visit our office in Alicante in person, we’ll arrange this on a case-by-case basis.
