A legal translation is the specialised translation of legal documents — such as contracts, court judgements, deeds, powers of attorney or legislation — carried out by a translator who is an expert in legal terminology and the legal systems of each country. This is not the same as a certified translation: a legal translation refers to the subject matter (the legal content), whilst a certified translation is an official form of translation bearing the signature and seal of the MAEC. When a legal document is to be used for official purposes with a government department, a court or a notary’s office, a certified translation is required, signed and stamped by an officially authorised sworn translator or interpreter. You can check their authorisation by language using the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ official search engine.
The general framework is governed, amongst other regulations, by Royal Decree 724/2020 (BOE), which regulates the Office for Language Interpretation and the role of sworn translators. If your procedure is international, in some cases an apostille or legalisation may also be required, depending on the country.
